A Beginner’s Guide to Spa Etiquette: How to Behave Like a Pro

So, you’ve booked a spa day—great choice! Whether you’re treating yourself to a solo escape or joining friends for a day of relaxation, there are a few unwritten rules you should know before stepping into that serene, eucalyptus-scented paradise. Because while spas are designed for tranquillity, that doesn’t mean they’re a free-for-all. Follow these tips, and you’ll be gliding through your spa experience like a seasoned pro.

1. Arrive on Time (or Better Yet, Early!)

Spas run like well-oiled machines, and your treatment is just one slot in a carefully scheduled day. Rocking up five minutes late doesn’t just mean you’ll lose precious massage minutes—it could throw off the whole schedule. Aim to arrive at least 15-20 minutes early to check in, change into your robe, and mentally prepare for peak relaxation.

2. Shower Before Your Treatment

Think of it as common courtesy. A quick rinse before a massage, facial, or dip in the pool ensures you’re fresh and ready for the experience. Plus, if you’ve been to the gym or doused yourself in perfume that morning, your therapist (and fellow spa-goers) will silently thank you.

3. The Art of the Towel Wrap

Whether you’re using the sauna, steam room, or hot tub, a towel should always be part of your ensemble. Sitting directly on the wood in a sauna? A no-go. And while some spas allow full nudity in certain areas, it’s best to take cues from those around you—when in doubt, wrap up.

4. Lower Your Volume, Lower Your Stress

Spas are not the place for loud phone calls, gossip sessions, or laughter that could shake the walls. It’s a sanctuary, not a coffee shop. Keep your voice hushed and, ideally, switch your phone to silent or—brace yourself—leave it in your locker.

5. Know Your Comfort Level

If you’re getting a massage, your therapist will step out while you undress and lie under the towel. You don’t have to strip completely if you’re not comfortable—most treatments can be done while keeping underwear on. The key is to relax, not stress about whether you’re doing it “right.”

6. Tipping: Yes or No?

In the UK, tipping at a spa isn’t as expected as it is in, say, the US. However, if you’ve had an exceptional treatment, a small gratuity or a simple “thank you” goes a long way. Some spas include service charges, so check your bill before handing over extra cash.

7. Don’t Overstay Your Welcome

Your spa day is all about unwinding, but lingering too long in facilities after your treatment—especially when staff are subtly cleaning up—might not be the best look. Enjoy every second, but be mindful that others are waiting to soak in the serenity, too.

Most Importantly... Have A Great Time

Spas are about relaxation, not rules—but following a few basic etiquette guidelines will help ensure that your visit (and everyone else’s) is as blissful as possible. So wrap up, breathe deep, and enjoy the peace—you’ve earned it.
